Trying to conceive can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re constantly thinking about ovulation, hormones, timing and whether your body is doing what it should.

At Ponsonby Wellness Centre in Auckland, we use Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to support women’s health and fertility throughout the menstrual cycle.

Rather than using the same treatment approach every week, TCM looks at the different phases of your cycle and adapts treatment according to what your body needs.

One of the key concepts in TCM fertility care is the balance between Yin and Yang, which can be understood alongside the natural changes that occur during the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle.

Watch what Practitioner Virginia says!

Pre-Ovulation, the time BEFORE your ovulation (~day 14), is the Yin phase.

During the Yin phase, the goal is to nourish estrogen levels. Estrogens are considered Yin in TCM.

Acupuncture and certain herbal medicines, like female ginseng, can help to support estrogen levels.

Post-Ovulation, the time AFTER your ovulation, is the Yang phase.

During the Yang phase, the goal is to nourish progesterone levels to support potential pregnancy. Progesterone is considered Yang in TCM.

Acupuncture and certain herbal medicines, like Duzhong, can help to support progesterone levels.

How Does TCM View the Menstrual Cycle?

Your menstrual cycle is constantly changing. Hormones, body temperature, cervical mucus, the endometrium and ovarian activity all shift throughout the month.

From a TCM perspective, these changes can also be viewed as a gradual transformation between Yin and Yang.

  • Follicular phase = Yin-building and development
  • Ovulation = transition from Yin to Yang
  • Luteal phase = Yang activity and warmth
  • Menstruation = a return towards Yin

This doesn’t mean TCM replaces the medical understanding of hormones or ovulation. Instead, it provides another framework that we can use alongside Western medicine to individualise your fertility support.

Follicular Phase: Nourishing Yin and Supporting Follicle Development

The follicular phase begins on the first day of your period and continues until ovulation.

During this stage, follicles develop in the ovaries and oestrogen gradually rises. From a TCM perspective, this is considered a time of Yin-building, nourishment and development.

Treatment during this phase may focus on supporting:

  • Healthy menstrual flow
  • Follicular development
  • Endometrial health
  • Blood and Yin nourishment
  • Relaxation and stress management
  • Overall reproductive health

Acupuncture points are selected according to your individual presentation rather than simply following a fixed protocol.

For some women, treatment may also include Chinese herbal medicine where appropriate.

Why might fertility acupuncture be useful during this phase?

Preparing the body before ovulation can be an important part of fertility care. Acupuncture is commonly used as a complementary therapy to support general wellbeing, relaxation and reproductive health.

Your treatment plan may change depending on your menstrual cycle, symptoms, fertility history and whether you are trying to conceive naturally or undergoing fertility treatment such as IVF or other assisted reproductive treatments (ART).

Around Ovulation: Supporting the Transition from Yin to Yang

Ovulation represents an important transition in the menstrual cycle.

In TCM theory, the body moves from a Yin-dominant phase towards Yang. This is associated with movement, activity and transformation.

Treatment around ovulation may focus on supporting the smooth transition through the cycle and addressing symptoms such as:

  • Ovulation discomfort
  • Stress or tension
  • Irregular cycles
  • Cervical mucus concerns
  • Premenstrual symptoms
  • General reproductive wellbeing

Your acupuncture treatment is tailored to your cycle and individual needs.

Luteal Phase: Supporting Yang and the Post-Ovulation Phase

After ovulation, progesterone rises and the body enters the luteal phase.

In TCM, this phase is associated with Yang — warmth, activity and the body’s ability to maintain and support the post-ovulation environment.

Acupuncture treatment during the luteal phase may focus on:

  • Supporting the post-ovulation phase
  • Promoting relaxation
  • Managing PMS symptoms
  • Supporting healthy sleep
  • Reducing stress and tension
  • Supporting overall menstrual and reproductive wellbeing

Rather than simply treating a fertility diagnosis, we look at the whole picture — including your cycle, digestion, sleep, stress, energy levels and menstrual symptoms.
