Why can acupuncture become body’s natural painkillers?

Why can acupuncture become body’s natural painkillers?

Acupuncture is the old and verified technique to stimulate specific ‘Acu Points’ on the body. The acupuncture practitioners insert thin needles through the skin in different depth for different points.

Studies has revealed the acupuncture is an effective way to reduce multiple types of pain, such as:

  • Chronic pain
    • Lower back pain
    • Neck pain
    • Osteoarthritis/ knee pain
    • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headache
    • Tension headaches
    • Migraine headaches
  • Injury pain
  • Sports pain

The theories of Acupuncture

Yin and Yang

This principle believes Yin and Yang are the two opposite poles that flow in the body. The two poles constitute health in the body with energy. They are opposite, but also related and inseparable from each other. The Yin and Yang are interdependent and stay in balance. An imbalanced Yin and Yang results in illness, infection, injury etc.

Qi and meridians

In TCM, Qi means the vital energy force that circulates throughout the body. Meridians are the channels that can carry Qi throughout the body. When illness leads to unbalanced, and irregular flow of Qi, acupuncture can help manage the balance and heal the body.

The gate theory of pain

The gate theory states a nervous system, pointing out there are nerves that both transmit and inhibit pain. The fibres come together and send pain signals to the brain, depending on the amount of pain input. Acupuncture stimulates the pain inhibitory nerve fibres to help pain relief.

Two-Gate control theory

This theory explained the effectiveness of acupuncture. There are two main nerve fibres: A-beta and C nerve fibres. The A-beta nerve fibres are large, fast conducting, and have a low volt threshold while the C nerve fibres are small, slow conducting, and have a high volt threshold.

The theory states that when high number of impulses coming from A-beta fibres closes the gate in the substantia gelatinase there is prevention of passage of painful impulses from the C fibres.

Acupuncture as a pain killer, it stimulates the acu points that affect the A-beta nerve fibres.

The needles move to create a steady stream of non-pain impulses and close the gate. After the gate closed, the pain impulses are stopped, and the pain leaves.
