Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek treatment. It can appear suddenly after lifting, exercising, sitting for long periods, or making an awkward movement. For some people, acute lower back pain settles within days, while others experience ongoing pain, stiffness, or restricted movement.
At Ponsonby Wellness Centre in Auckland, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) may be used as part of a personalised approach to managing acute lower back pain and supporting recovery.
Some injuries may be ACC covered. You can discover whether your injury can be covered by ACC here
What Is Acute Lower Back Pain?
Acute lower back pain generally refers to pain that develops suddenly and lasts for a relatively short period, usually less than six weeks.
Common symptoms may include:
- Lower back pain or aching
- Muscle tightness or spasms
- Stiffness, especially after sitting or resting
- Difficulty bending or straightening
- Pain when standing, walking, or changing position
- Reduced mobility
Acute back pain can occur after lifting something heavy, sports or exercise, repetitive movements, prolonged sitting, or a sudden twist. Sometimes, however, there is no obvious trigger.
How Does TCM Understand Lower Back Pain?
Traditional Chinese Medicine views pain through the relationship between the body’s circulation, muscles, joints and internal systems.
From a TCM perspective, lower back pain may be associated with factors such as stagnation of Qi and Blood, muscular tension, or the influence of external factors such as cold and dampness. Different patterns can present with different types of pain, which is why TCM treatment is individualised rather than using the same acupuncture points for everyone.
Your practitioner will consider the location and nature of your pain, movement restrictions, muscle tension and other health factors when developing a treatment plan.
How Can Acupuncture Help Acute Lower Back Pain?
Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into specific acupuncture points on the body. Depending on your presentation, points may be selected around the lower back, legs, hips, or other areas of the body.
Acupuncture may help support people experiencing acute lower back pain by:
Reducing pain and muscle tension
Acupuncture may help modulate pain signalling and encourage relaxation of tense muscles, which can make movement more comfortable.
Supporting mobility
When pain and muscle tightness decrease, some people find it easier to move, stretch and return to normal daily activities.
Supporting the body’s natural recovery
Acupuncture is often used as a complementary treatment alongside appropriate movement, exercise and other forms of care.
Providing personalised treatment
TCM treatment is tailored to the individual. Two people with similar lower back pain may receive different acupuncture approaches depending on their symptoms and overall presentation.

Acupuncture for Lower Back Pain: What to Expect
Your first appointment usually begins with an assessment of your symptoms and medical history. Your practitioner may ask about:
- When the pain started
- What causes or aggravates the pain
- Where the pain is located
- Whether the pain travels into the hip or leg
- Your range of movement
- Muscle tension and tenderness
- Previous injuries or episodes of back pain
Based on this assessment, acupuncture points and other TCM techniques may be selected to suit your individual needs.
Treatment may be combined with advice around gentle movement, posture, activity modification or other appropriate self-care strategies.
Should You Rest With Acute Lower Back Pain?
Complete bed rest is generally not recommended for uncomplicated acute lower back pain. Gentle movement and gradually returning to normal activities can be helpful for recovery.
However, avoid movements that significantly increase your pain, particularly heavy lifting or strenuous exercise during the early stage. Your treatment plan should be appropriate for the cause and severity of your symptoms.
When Should You Seek Medical Assessment?
Most uncomplicated episodes of acute lower back pain improve with time and appropriate care. However, acupuncture should not replace medical assessment when there may be a more serious underlying problem.
Seek urgent medical attention if back pain occurs with symptoms such as:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Numbness around the groin or inner thighs
- Significant or progressive weakness in the legs
- Severe pain following a major accident or trauma
- Fever or feeling seriously unwell
- Unexplained weight loss
- Severe pain that is worsening or not improving
Pain that travels down the leg, persistent numbness, or ongoing symptoms may also require assessment by an appropriate healthcare professional.
